Discover the animal park of Esch only a few footsteps from the youth hostel! The goal of the farm is to present ancient domestic animal breeds. Meet the horse race Konik and Huzule as well as the Poitou donkeys.

Sometimes we don’t see the forest for the trees! The forest and its trees are often merely viewed as scenery, but trees are actually interesting and diverse life forms. Not that long ago, only little was known about a bat’s way of life. They live at night and see in the dark, but what do they actually do? Where do they live? And why are they so important to our environment? In this activity, we’ll learn all there is about the mysterious lives of bats.

How do we best gather and pick plants? How do we properly dry, preserve and categorise plants? We’ll learn how to create an interesting and informative work of reference. Using our very first home-made herbarium, we’ll learn how to recognise trees based on their leaves.

When dusk falls and the Ellergronn goes quiet, some animals start their day as they leave their holes and caves: The creatures of the night. They silently fly through the night sky or sneak through the bushes. This activity is all about exploring the nocturnal animals of our environment.

10. The mines and their employees in the ‘Ellergronn’

How was iron ore mined back in the days? Which tools and machines were used to work in the tunnels and galleries? In collaboration with the ‘Entente Mine Cockerill’ we’ll learn all about the history of the mine and the tough working conditions of the miners.

11. Birds during spring - Nature conservation centre Ellergronn

We are listening to the chatter of birds, looking for traces and observing the different kind of birds. We are also discovering the different species and talking about their way of life, especially in spring and autumn. The main subject of this workshop is the behavior of the birds during the year (courtship display, nest-building, brooding, feeding, etc.). The activity is adapted to the age of the children. Other topics for older children include anatomy, ecology and bird protection.

12. Precious textile fibres - Nature conservation centre Ellergronn

Natural and synthetic fibres, manufactured since 1930, allow us to wear comfortable, protective and thermal clothing. During the activity at Ellergronn, children learn a lot about the origin of these pleasant textile fibres. After this introduction, plaits are made from sheep and alpaca wool. Some of the leaves collected during the walk through the forest can be plait in as well. Depending on the season, a visit to the sheep meadow can also be organised.

13. Who is crawling? - Nature conservation centre Ellergronn

Snails are not among humans' favorite animals. They are neither cute nor fleecy, but are always sliming around. Although they are so slow and seem to be defenseless, snails are a model of success. We follow the tracks of the snails in a playful way to get to know more about them.

We often do not realize that small animals also live in water. They are easy to catch in water ponds even if one does not have professional knowledge. During the activity, we are going to observe them and become more acquainted with them.

15. National Museum of Resistance

Located in the centre of Esch-sur-Alzette, the Museum of Resistance deals with Nazi occupation and Luxembourg’s role in the Second World War as well as the reaction of the local population until the country’s liberation. Furthermore, the museum explains the system of concentration camps while documenting the sad fate of Luxembourg’s Jewish population. The museum also offers temporary exhibitions as well as guided tours of the museum and thematic tours of the city.

16. Torchlight hike

Discover the ‘Ellergronn’ nature reserve during a nightly torchlight hike and learn about the mysterious natural landscape. Furthermore, a guide will explain the purpose and functionality of the old underground mining galleries.

17. Science City and blast furnace of Belval

The reconversion of the entire steel industry is one of the most incredible developments in Europe. During a guided tour, you get to explore Science City as well visit the original blast furnace, where the processes required to produce raw iron and the importance of Belval’s industrial history will be explained to you. One of the highlights is the climb onto the 40 metre high platform of the blast furnace.

18. Riding the mining railroad in Rumelange

A twenty minute ride on the mining railroad will get the participants into the mining galleries, which will subsequently be visited on foot. The different techniques of mining iron ore as well as the required machinery and harsh working conditions of the miners will be explained. The tour itself is recommended for all age groups and takes approximately 1½ hours, after which the participants take the mining railroad back into daylight. Furthermore, the guided tour is wheelchair accessible.

19. Interactive tour at National Mining Museum in Rumelange

The interactive tour allows children to step into role of a miner. On foot, the participants will head down to their temporary workplace, rapidly noticing just how dark it can get underground. The children will learn about the dangers and challenges of working in poor lighting, equipped with nothing but an acetylene lamp. The children will be actively involved in the mining process as they assist the guide in drilling, breaking iron ore blocks, securing the roof, pushing the mining trolley and even assisting a controlled explosion. As the proud children resurface into daylight after their shift ends, a present awaits them to reward them for their day‘s work.

20. Urban gardening in Esch

The "Geméisguart" in Esch is a 5-minute walk from the youth hostel. The activity provides a basic knowledge into gardening. In addition to a visit, you have the opportunity to transform a pallete into a planter and creating a seed bomb to take away.

21. Cooking in Esch’s urban garden

During this activity, only a few steps from the hostel, participants prepare and enjoy a common meal (starter, main course and dessert) with seasonal vegetables. The kitchen workshop will be preceded by the harvest of the ingredients and a visit of the urban garden.
