Mini-koala climbing course for children aged 5 – 7

From this year onward we have a brand new ‘mini-koala’ climbing course on offer. All children between the age of 5 and 7 are invited to participate in a 12-week course led by our professional climbing coaches. The activity will take place every Thursday between 2pm and 3pm on the youth hostel’s very own indoor climbing wall. While the primary aim is for the children to have fun, the course furthermore aims at stimulating concentration, coordination, balance and confidence.

Climbing is part of our human development and curiosity. Who hasn’t at some point felt the urge of climbing up a chair, wall or tree? It is therefore only natural to further support this development. Whilst having a whole load of fun, the ‘mini-koalas’ will be confronted with effort, happiness, pride, frustration and success, the sensations which make up much of our daily lives. Climbing is the perfect activity to satisfy a child’s need for movement whilst exploring their own boundaries, taking responsibility and learning to trust other people.

Requirements:
Course is optimised for children aged 5-7. No prior experience in climbing is required.

Sessions:
12 dates – always on Thursday from 2pm – 3pm.
25.01. / 01.02. / 08.02. /  22.02. / 01.03. / 08.03. / 15.03. / 22.03. / 29.03. / 19.04. / 26.04. / 03.05.2018

Climbing course for children aged 8 – 12

All children, beginners or advanced, between the age of 8 and 12 are invited to participate in course led by our professional climbing coaches from 25th of January until 3rd of May, 2018. While the primary aim is for the children to have fun, the course furthermore aims at stimulating concentration, coordination, balance and confidence. Acquired skills therefore may help kids in everyday life.

From a physical point of view, climbing is considered as a full-body workout because exercises involving coordination lead to an improved cooperation between different muscle groups and extremities. From a psychological point of view, the facing of challenges in climbing help enhancing self-confidence and self-assurance. The kids will be required to develop strategies in order to overcome various tasks. Furthermore, due to climbing being a sport in which progress is perceived rapidly, self-confidence is strengthened.

The course will take place if at least 6 participants register. Should the minimum amount of participants not be reached, you will be notified in due time.

Guided hike of the Nat’Our trails around Vianden

Situated along the river banks of the Our in a picturesque low mountain range, our youth hostel in Vianden is the ideal starting point for hiking trails through the region. The city’s medieval castle is one of the prettiest feudal residences of Europe and perhaps the most prominent landmark of the country. To witness the most beautiful highlights of the region, we will combine hiking routes 4 and 5 with the Our Valley promenade. With a distance of approximately 23 km and the region’s hilly terrain, the tour is considered to be challenging and a level of sure-footedness is required.

Our tour starts in Vianden along the Nat’Our hiking trail 5, past a local chapel direction Bivels. From there on we change onto Nat’Our hiking trail 4, leading into the direction of Stolzembourg. At some point we will pass by one of the largest pumped-storage hydropower plants in Europe, at which point we move on to the Our Valley promenade. The recently constructed boardwalk leading to Bivels along the Our is one of the highlights of the promenade. At this point in the tour, it is possible for participants to take a shortcut and continue along the promenade to get back to Vianden (total of short tour: approx. 19 km). The rest of the group will continue onto the German side of the river until they reach Falkenstein castle. The last leg of the tour will lead up a hill over a rocky trail along the border and reward the group with breathtaking views over the region before heading back down to Vianden and its stunning castle.

To round off the tour, the kitchen staff of our youth hostel will prepare a Luxembourgish dinner that you won’t want to miss out on! Our restaurant also has mesmerising view over the beautifully lit castle, situated just a stone’s throw from our hostel. Those who don’t feel like driving home after a long hike and hearty meal can reserve a bed at the youth hostel beforehand.

Date:
Saturday, 17th of March 2018 at 11:00 with a subsequent Luxembourgish dinner at the youth hostel. Showers also available. Please bring your lunch box and own drinks for the hiking tour.

Dancing procession of Echternach

Thousands of pilgrims from around the World gather in Echternach on Whit Tuesday of every year to 'dance' (or jump) through the centre of the city. Dressed in white and accompanied by an everlasting loop of polka-like music, the 'jumpers' eventually end up at the grave of Saint Willibrord, the founder of the abbey around which the city was built. This unique spectacle is one of the annual highlights for Luxembourg's oldest city and was added to UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. While religious in origin, the celebration is highly recommended to everyone alike.

Full moon geocaching in Beaufort

On the 29th of May a very special night awaits us as we will discover the world of geocaching as dusk sets in. The light of the full moon will help us with the mystical tour of approximately 6 km and turn the event into something truly unique.

But what exactly is geocaching? Geocaching is a modern scavenger hunt with GPS devices, exciting for all ages as well as beginners and intermediate learners alike. The scavenger hunt is all about finding secret hiding places and the treasures they hold, so called ‘caches’. These hiding places are located by means of geographical coordinates and with the help of GPS devices. Usually the treasures consist of a container as well as a logbook and various bartering objects. After the participants registered themselves in the log book, the ‘cache’ is positioned back in its original hiding place. Additionally, it’s also possible to log on to a designated website and to evaluate the ‘cache’ – without revealing the hiding place, of course. These steps are taken to ensure that the ‘cache’ will be available for other people in the future.

The activity will take place if at least 6 participants are registered. Should the minimum number of participants not be reached, everyone will be informed of this in due time. The tour is ideal for both adults and children (age 9+) and is suited for both beginners as well as experienced geocachers.

Attention: No courses will take place during Luxembourgish school holidays.

Price per child for a total of 12 sessions:

  • 138 € (Price for members of the youth hostels*)
  • 150 € (Standard price for non-members)

20.09.2018 - 20.12.2018

Climbing course for children aged 8 – 12

The activity will take place every Thursday between 3.30pm and 5pm on the youth hostel’s very own 14 metres indoor climbing wall.
