Fully booked! Mini-koala climbing course for children aged 5 – 7

From this year onward we have a brand new ‘mini-koala’ climbing course on offer. All children between the age of 5 and 7 are invited to participate in a 12-week course led by our professional climbing coaches. The activity will take place every Thursday between 2pm and 3pm on the youth hostel’s very own indoor climbing wall. While the primary aim is for the children to have fun, the course furthermore aims at stimulating concentration, coordination, balance and confidence.

Climbing is part of our human development and curiosity. Who hasn’t at some point felt the urge of climbing up a chair, wall or tree? It is therefore only natural to further support this development. Whilst having a whole load of fun, the ‘mini-koalas’ will be confronted with effort, happiness, pride, frustration and success, the sensations which make up much of our daily lives. Climbing is the perfect activity to satisfy a child’s need for movement whilst exploring their own boundaries, taking responsibility and learning to trust other people.

Requirements:
Course is optimised for children aged 5-7. No prior experience in climbing is required.

Sessions:
12 dates – always on Thursday from 2pm – 3pm.

25.01.2018 - 03.05.2018

Fully booked! Climbing course for children aged 8 – 12

All children, beginners or advanced, between the age of 8 and 12 are invited to participate in course led by our professional climbing coaches from 25th of January until 3rd of May, 2018. The activity will take place every Thursday between 3.30pm and 5pm on the youth hostel’s very own 14 metres indoor climbing wall. While the primary aim is for the children to have fun, the course furthermore aims at stimulating concentration, coordination, balance and confidence. Acquired skills therefore may help kids in everyday life.

From a physical point of view, climbing is considered as a full-body workout because exercises involving coordination lead to an improved cooperation between different muscle groups and extremities. From a psychological point of view, the facing of challenges in climbing help enhancing self-confidence and self-assurance. The kids will be required to develop strategies in order to overcome various tasks. Furthermore, due to climbing being a sport in which progress is perceived rapidly, self-confidence is strengthened.

The course will take place if at least 6 participants register. Should the minimum amount of participants not be reached, you will be notified in due time.

Dancing procession of Echternach

Thousands of pilgrims from around the World gather in Echternach on Whit Tuesday of every year to 'dance' (or jump) through the centre of the city. Dressed in white and accompanied by an everlasting loop of polka-like music, the 'jumpers' eventually end up at the grave of Saint Willibrord, the founder of the abbey around which the city was built. This unique spectacle is one of the annual highlights for Luxembourg's oldest city and was added to UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. While religious in origin, the celebration is highly recommended to everyone alike.

Full moon geocaching in Beaufort

On the 29th of May a very special night awaits us as we will discover the world of geocaching as dusk sets in. The light of the full moon will help us with the mystical tour of approximately 6 km and turn the event into something truly unique.

But what exactly is geocaching? Geocaching is a modern scavenger hunt with GPS devices, exciting for all ages as well as beginners and intermediate learners alike. The scavenger hunt is all about finding secret hiding places and the treasures they hold, so called ‘caches’. These hiding places are located by means of geographical coordinates and with the help of GPS devices. Usually the treasures consist of a container as well as a logbook and various bartering objects. After the participants registered themselves in the log book, the ‘cache’ is positioned back in its original hiding place. Additionally, it’s also possible to log on to a designated website and to evaluate the ‘cache’ – without revealing the hiding place, of course. These steps are taken to ensure that the ‘cache’ will be available for other people in the future.

The activity will take place if at least 6 participants are registered. Should the minimum number of participants not be reached, everyone will be informed of this in due time. The tour is ideal for both adults and children (age 9+) and is suited for both beginners as well as experienced geocachers.

Guided hike through the Red Rock region – in the footsteps of Carlo Hemmer*

The fifth edition of our traditional hike in the footsteps of Carlo Hemmer will lead us to the Red Rock region of Luxembourg – the so-called “Minette”. Two very diverse stages of 24 to 28 km each await us, with shortcuts possible on both days. Furthermore, participants can choose between two performance groups, one of which will take a more casual approach to the hike while the other will walk at a higher pace. Our brand new youth hostel in Esch-sur-Alzette will serve as starting point and destination for the day.

On the first day we meet at the youth hostel in Esch-sur-Alzette and take the train to Pétange. From there on, a diverse trail through Luxembourg’s industrial heritage region will take us back to the hostel. As the tour leads through the nature reserve as well as the “Giele Botter”, the participants will immediately see why this corner of Luxembourg is referred to as the Red Rock region. Further along the way, our group will be rewarded with many views over former workers’ housing estates such as Lasauvage, mining railroads of the “Fond-de-Gras”, as well as abandoned industrial sites reclaimed by nature. At the end of our first day, a walk through the modern district of Esch-Belval will underline the contrast between the region’s past and present.
The overnight will be spent at our modern and spacious youth hostel in Esch-sur-Alzette where our kitchen staff will make sure we have a well-deserved, hearty meal. The youth hostel is located right by the train station and just a few minutes’ walk from the multicultural and lively centre of Luxembourg’s second largest city.

The second stage is a slightly shorter and will lead from the youth hostel through the animal park of the Galgenberg as well as the “Ellergronn” nature reserve. From there on, we head on towards Kayl and the so-called “Léiffrächen” – a grotto and monument in remembrance of the harsh working conditions faced by the miners of Luxembourg’s past. Passing Schifflange, the group will head back to Esch through the surface mining pits of the “Lalléngerbierg” located between Schifflange and Esch-sur-Alzette. A spectacular and interesting landscape will reward us with a final view over most of the “Minette”.

As in previous years, the hiking weekend is organised by the Luxembourgish youth hostelling association in cooperation with the Carlo Hemmer* foundation.

* Carlo Hemmer (1913-1988) from Ettelbrück was an important economist from Luxembourg. Alongside his many professional endeavours both in and outside of Luxembourg, Hemmer had always been a strong supporter of the youth and therefore also of Luxembourg’s youth hostel network. Upon his passing, half of Hemmer’s wealth was donated to the ‘Fondation Lëtzebuerger Jugendherbergen’ founded in 1986 and later renamed to ‘Carlo Hemmer Foundation’. The aim of the foundation is to receive funds and manage the foundation’s assets in order to support youth hostels, social tourism, sporting events and educational activities – independent of political, social and religious aspects.

  • 56 € (members’ price) **
  • 62 € (standard price for non-members)

Attention: No courses will take place during Luxembourgish school holidays.

Price per child for a total of 12 sessions:

  • 138 € (Price for members of the youth hostels*)
  • 150 € (Standard price for non-members)

Climbing course for children aged 8 – 12
