24.09.2020

On the 27th of September every year, the world celebrates the World Tourism Day since its creation in 1980 by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). This organisation supports the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally acceptable tourism.

The theme of this year’s event is ‘Global community unites to celebrate tourism and rural development’. Thus, the 2020 edition of the World Tourism Day celebrates the unique role that tourism plays in providing opportunities outside of big cities and preserving cultural and natural heritage all around the world. This year’s evet comes at a critical moment, as countries all around the world look to tourism to recover economically, such as in rural communities.

As the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19 has brought the world to a standstill, tourism was and unfortunately still is one of the worst affected of all major economic sectors. Tourism is a major source of employment all over the world. It is estimated that one job in the core tourism sector creates about one-and-a-half additional or indirect jobs in the tourism-related economy. Furthermore, overall tourism accounts for one in ten jobs worldwide.

The World Tourism Day strives for cultivating and creating awareness among the society globally on the significance of tourism and its social, political, financial and cultural value. Thus the importance of celebrating this day and supporting tourism all over the world in this special day and age.
