7 fun facts about Luxembourg

The Grand-Duchy may be small but there are lots of fun facts to discover about it. We put together some of the most interesting facts for you to read. Enjoy!

1. Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel was the first leader in the European Union to marry someone of the same sex. He and his partner got hitched in 2015.
2. Luxembourg is also one of the smallest countries in the world with 2,600 km².
3. The country’s National Day is celebrated every year on the 23^rd of June. But none of the Grand Dukes or Duchesses were born on that day. In fact, this dates back to 1962, when it was decided to move the actual birthday date of Grand Duchess Charlotte from 23^rd of January to June, to take advantage of the warmer weather.
4. The restaurant Chiggeri, located in the historical part of the capital city, is according to the Guinness Book of World Records the restaurant with the world’s largest wine list with about 2.000 different wines.
5. Luxembourg is the only still existent Grand-Duchy in the world.
6. Luxembourg is the third most successful country at Eurovision song contest, winning five times this title and despite not having participated since 1994.
7. Luxembourg won one gold medal at the Olympics in 1952 thanks to the athlete Josy Barthel.
