What language do they speak in Luxembourg?

‘Moien, bonjour, hallo, bom dia, hello, buenos días ...’ Welcome to Luxembourg, a multicultural and thus multilingual country!
We are often asked what language we actually speak in Luxembourg. We would like to shed some light on this.

With a foreign population of almost 50%, it is obvious that Luxembourg is a multilingual country. The languages spoken are as diverse as the multiculturalism. There are three officially recognised languages: Luxembourgish, French and German.

Luxembourgish (‘Lëtzebuergesch’):
Luxembourgish is the national language and a strong symbol of national identity. Historically a spoken language, it has become increasingly used in written communication, including literature and the media. It was officially declared the national language in 1984.

French (‘Français’):
French plays a dominant role in administration, law and official documents. It is widely used in government and is the preferred language for legal texts and court proceedings.

German (‘Deutsch’):
German is widely used in the media and education, especially in primary schools. It is also the main language for newspapers and other publications.

This multilingualism highlights Luxembourg's open and diverse culture, making it a linguistic bridge in Europe.
