Making a gesture towards sustainability
We are thrilled to announce a significant collaboration in celebration of our 90th anniversary. In partnership with the Fondation Hëllef fir d'Natur, we are committed to planting 90 trees, bolstering our dedication to environmental protection.
Marking a milestone in our anniversary year, the tree-planting initiative underscores our pledge towards a sustainable future. This collaboration allows us not only to embark on reforestation efforts but also to set a precedent for future generations. These trees will enhance soil fertility, offer habitats for wildlife, and contribute to improved air quality.
A significant moment was captured on 18 March at the Remerschen youth hostel, where the first tree, a Lime tree (Tilia), was planted. This event was graced by the presence of Romain Weis, President of the Youth Hostel Association; Michel Gloden, Mayor of Schengen; and Nicolas Hormain from Fondation Hëllef fir d'Natur. Demonstrating their commitment to sustainability, children from the Maison Relais Schengen actively participated by digging the hole for the tree.
But why a lime tree? Lime trees hold a venerable spot in European tradition, often serving as communal gathering places, embodying community spirit and belonging. They are notably resilient to air pollution, making them suitable for urban settings.
Through this initiative, the association aims to mobilize not just the youth and elders, but also the wider public, in safeguarding our natural environment.
The journey doesn’t stop here; the planting of the remaining 89 trees will occur over the next few weeks. The Fondation Hëllef fir d'Natur will oversee the cultivation of a diverse forest composed of oak, beech, mountain ash, maple, and hornbeam trees. This new growth aims to replace the spruce trees lost to bark beetle, crafting a woodland more robust against climate change.
Together, we can contribute positively to our environment and ensure the preservation of our natural beauty for generations to come.
