Youth hostels celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Schengen Treaty

19.06.2025

14 June 2025 marks the 40th anniversary of a historic date, as it was on this day in 1985 that the Schengen Agreement was signed, laying the foundation for one of the most important projects of European integration: the abolition of internal border controls in Europe.

It marked a turning point in European history. Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg signed a treaty stipulating that 'internal borders may be crossed at any point without checks on persons'. What began as a bold step by five countries has developed into a free movement area that now encompasses 27 European countries.

The Schengen Agreement has enabled millions of Europeans to travel, work and live without borders. It has come to symbolise a united Europe without barriers, and is now regarded as one of the European Union's greatest achievements.
