About us
Welcome to our youth hostels, where encounters become unforgettable experiences.
For more than 90 years, we have been offering young people, groups and families so much more than just accommodation. We create spaces where people can meet, exchange ideas and grow as individuals. As part of the global Hostelling International network, we combine tradition and innovation to provide unforgettable travel experiences.
Who are we?
The Luxembourg Youth Hostels are a non-profit association (ASBL) that belongs to Hostelling International, an international federation comprising more than 2,300 youth hostels in 58 countries worldwide.
The youth hostel network has continued to evolve. These establishments have become an integral part of their local environments, occupying a vital place in the social, cultural and economic fabric of different regions. Remaining true to their original objectives, they have become reliable partners in youth and social tourism and continuing education.
In addition to offering accommodation for schools, clubs, groups, families and hikers, youth hostels provide balanced meals featuring regional and fairtrade produce. They also offer a variety of leisure activities and have the infrastructure necessary to host conferences and children’s birthday parties. The age restriction has been lifted, making youth hostels accessible to people of all ages.
Additionally, the administrative headquarters of the youth hostels manages nurseries, after-school clubs and youth centres, where almost 1,000 children are cared for daily by educators from the non-profit organisation.
The youth hostels in Luxembourg
Youth hostels in Luxembourg are much more than just affordable accommodation for holidays or short stays in Luxembourg!
Here are all the youth hostels in the Grand Duchy:
The fundamental objectives of youth hostels
The association’s mission includes:
- The aim is to promote social, sporting and educational tourism, particularly for young people, families and children.
- We aim to establish, maintain and manage youth hostels, accommodation centres, training centres and activity and entertainment centres in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
- We encourage young people of all origins, nationalities, genders, religions and political opinions to meet without distinction.
- We organise educational stays in youth hostels and promote extracurricular activities connected with our hostels.
In an increasingly interconnected and globalised world, the concept of open encounters between cultures and peaceful coexistence between people of different nationalities is becoming ever more important. The youth hostel movement remains true to its origins, navigating the balance between idealism and professionalisation, and between economic constraints and the specific mission set out in its statutes. The aim is to continue offering an experience that goes far beyond simply providing accommodation and breakfast.
Our history
Luxembourg has had youth hostels for over 90 years, and they have been around for almost 120 years worldwide.
The history of youth hostels began in Germany in 1909, when a group of schoolchildren and their teacher, Richard Schirrman, took shelter in an old building during a storm while out hiking. Schirrman searched for a long time before finding the old, disused school. This is how the German, and later international, youth hostel network came into being.
