A new initiative run by volunteers to help combat single-use plastics has reached Luxembourg and is enjoying a great deal of momentum. With the help of an app called ‘Refill’, users can navigate on a map on their smartphones to find the nearest location to get clean tap water for free to refill their bottles. Luxembourg’s youth hostels have now collectively joined the initiative!
Great for hikers and cyclists
Of course our guests as well as passers-by were always more than welcome to fill up their bottles with free tap water at Luxembourg’s youth hostels, so not much has changed with regard to that. However, the initiative is mainly aimed towards people who find themselves in the area and would rather fill up their reusable bottle than having to buy another one. Be it hikers, cyclists or just about anyone else.
Refill is a free smartphone application available for iOS and Android. It works exactly like any other map provider such as Google Maps or OsmAnd, except that it shows little water pins wherever people can refill containers with clean drinking water for free. Screenshots can be found below this article! Furthermore, a sticker on the door identifies participating establishments without the need for an app.
Expanding the scope of our activities
Luxembourg’s youth hostels have always been passionate about the preservation of the environment, and participating in the Refill initiative is just one of the many things we do. Should you ever think of anything you feel we could easily implement, don’t hesitate to let us know!
Happy responsible drinking!
