‘International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste’

01.10.2020

On the 29th of September, the world celebrated for the first time the ‘International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste’ (IDAFLW), a global wake-up call on the need to change and rebalance the way our food is produced and consumed.

Did you know that on a global scale, around 14 % of produced food is lost between harvest and retail? This means that all the resources that were used to produce this food – such as water, land, energy, man power and capital – also go to waste. In addition to this, the disposal of waste leads to greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change.

The COVID-19 pandemic has also challenged the food production in many ways and increased the levels of food waste. Reducing the loss of food and waste has become more and more essential in a world where the number of people that are affected by hunger has been rising for years and tons of food are wasted every day.

It is now the moment to become more aware of the importance of the issue of food loss and waste as well as of the fundamental role of sustainable food production. Actions are required globally to maximize the use of food we produce. One action the Luxembourg youth hostels are proud to present is the ‘Frigo Anti-gaspi’ in Tuntange, a project created a year ago in the framework of the awareness campaign against food waste. The ‘Frigo Anti-gaspi’ is a fridge which offers freshly prepared dishes from the Hollenfels youth hostel. Thus any resident, passer-by or tourist can take a meal to go out of the fridge and pay its prize into the cash box. The aim of this anti-waste food campaign is to reduce the amount of organic waste by giving ready-made meals a second chance to be consumed and to offer people living nearby ready-made meals at an attractive price.
