Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

In times of climate change and growing environmental awareness, more and more travellers are looking for ways to make their adventures more sustainable. Luxembourg, the little gem in the heart of Europe, offers the perfect base for eco-friendly travel with its network of modern youth hostels. Preserving this natural beauty is not only important to the locals, but also to us as responsible hosts. Our hostels have always had sustainability in their DNA. Find out how you can travel more sustainably this year.

Environmentally friendly accommodation

We are proud that all our youth hostels have multiple eco-friendly certifications:

Sustainable mobility in Luxembourg

A special benefit for eco-conscious travellers: Since 2020, all public transport in Luxembourg has been free of charge! You can use buses, trains and trams throughout the country without a ticket - a revolutionary measure that makes Luxembourg a pioneer in sustainable mobility.

Cycling in the Grand Duchy

As certified Bed+Bike accommodation, all our youth hostels offer special services for cyclists: secure bike storage, repair kits, bike washing facilities and valuable information on cycling routes. If you still need inspiration for your cycling trip, whether trekking, MTB, gravel or road, take a look at our package deals website.

Hiking in unspoilt nature

Hiking has been on the agenda ever since the youth hostel movement began. Our hostels in Mullerthal and Eislek are now official hiking partners of the Quality Hiking Trails and offer special services for hikers. The hostels also offer a wide range of all-inclusive packages for hikers, including accommodation, food and tour suggestions.

Member benefits for sustainable travel

As a member of Hostelling International and Luxembourg’s youth hostel association, you not only get special rates on accommodation, but also exclusive benefits for eco-friendly travel. In addition to a wide range of local and international discounts, we would like to highlight two particularly sustainable benefits:

  • 10% discount on bus tickets with busbud: travel sustainable by planning your international trip by bus and save money.
  • Discounted eSIM from Airalo: Stay digitally connected with a discounted eSIM card - and for every eSIM purchased through us, an additional 10% is donated to the HI Sustainability Fund.

Your membership makes a double contribution to sustainability: You save on environmentally friendly travel options and support important climate change projects around the world.

5 tips for sustainable travel in Luxembourg

  1. Travelling: Take advantage of Luxembourg's free public transport - buses, trains and trams are free throughout the country! For international journeys, take advantage of the BusBud discounts as a member.
  2. Stay connected: Use the discounted Airalo eSIM for members and contribute to the HI Sustainability Fund at the same time.
  3. On site: Discover the surrounding area on foot or by bike. As certified Bed+Bike accommodation, many of our youth hostels offer bike rental.
  4. Consumption: Look out for our ‘Sou schmaacht Lëtzebuerg’ and Fairtrade products at our in-house restaurants Melting Pot. Support local shops and try regional specialities.
  5. Respect: Keep to marked paths, especially in the nature reserves, and always take your rubbish with you. And don't buy plastic water bottles - fill your own for free at our refill stations.

Our contribution to global climate protection

We are proud to be part of the global Hostelling International network, which actively supports climate change projects through the HI Sustainability Fund.
Sustainable travel is not a sacrifice, it is a more conscious and intense experience. Our multi-certified hostels in Luxembourg offer you the opportunity to minimise your carbon footprint while enjoying an authentic travel experience.
