24 hours in Luxembourg City
Luxembourg’s capital is compact enough to explore on foot, yet varied enough to fill an entire day. Historic fortifications, charming streets, spectacular viewpoints, cosy cafés and green valleys: it is all within walking distance.
And the best part? Your starting point is right in the middle of it all. The youth hostel Luxembourg City is located in Pfaffenthal, in the valley just below the historic Old Town.
So pack your bag, put on your walking shoes and let’s explore Luxembourg City!
One day, countless discoveries
Good to know
- Public transport (buses, trams and trains) is free throughout Luxembourg, so you can hop on whenever your legs need a break.
- The Old Town sits on a plateau above the valleys. Luckily, the free Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator and the free funicular to Kirchberg save your legs.
08:00 – Good morning from Pfaffenthal
A great day starts with a good breakfast. Fuel up at the youth hostel Luxembourg City, grab a coffee and get ready for a full day of discoveries.
Before you set off, take a moment to enjoy the view from the hostel terrace, which looks out over the Old Town.
Our tip: Wear comfortable shoes – today, we’re exploring Luxembourg City on foot!
09:00 – Discover the Old Town
Time to head up to Luxembourg’s historic Old Town! The easiest way from Pfaffenthal is the free Panoramic Elevator. The glass elevator takes you up to Pescatore Park, with sweeping views across the Alzette Valley on the way.
From there, wander through the charming streets of the Old Town. Pass the Grand Ducal Palace, discover the historic squares and simply take your time. Sometimes, it’s the little lanes and hidden corners that make a city truly special.
Your next stop: the Bock Promontory, where history meets spectacular views. The remains of the fortifications are a reminder of Luxembourg’s past as one of Europe’s most important fortified cities.
Our tip: The elevator is out of service for maintenance on the first Monday of every month. On that day, the walk up is just as scenic.
10:30 – Time for a coffee break
Sightseeing makes you thirsty – or at least ready for a coffee. Take a break at one of the city’s many cafés and coffee shops. Whether you prefer an espresso, a cappuccino or something sweet on the side, this is the perfect moment to slow down.
Our tip: Stop by at Café Knopes where the coffee is freshly roasted every week.
11:30 – The most beautiful balcony in Europe?
Next stop: the Chemin de la Corniche.
This spectacular walkway follows the old city walls and offers one of the most iconic views in Luxembourg: the Alzette Valley and the historic Grund district below. Get your camera or smartphone ready!
Must-have photo: The view over Grund, with the Alzette River and its historic houses.
12:30 – Lunch in the city
Time for lunch! Luxembourg City has plenty of restaurants, cafés and bistros, from traditional Luxembourgish cuisine to quick bites and modern kitchens. If you want to discover Luxembourg through its food, this is your chance to try a local speciality.
- Quick & casual: Café / bakery: Pâtisserie Hoffmann
- Local: Luxembourger cuisine: Brasserie-Restaurant Um Dierfgen
- Vegan: Reed Plaisir végétal
Our tip: Don’t rush. A relaxed lunch is just as much part of the experience as sightseeing.
14:00 – Welcome to Grund
After lunch, head down into Grund, and suddenly Luxembourg City feels a little different. Historic houses, the Alzette River, small bridges and plenty of greenery make this one of the most charming parts of the capital.
Stroll along the river, explore the little streets or simply find a spot to sit and soak up the atmosphere. You can also stop by Neumünster Abbey, a cultural centre in a former abbey right in the heart of Grund.
15:30 – What’s your afternoon vibe?
- Culture lover? Head to Kirchberg and visit MUDAM – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean for contemporary art and striking architecture. Getting there is easy: take the free funicular from Pfaffenthal up to Kirchberg and walk the last few minutes. Mudam is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays.
- Need some nature? Spend more time in the Pétrusse Valley and enjoy a green escape right in the heart of the city.
- Want to go underground? Explore the Bock Casemates, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These tunnels, carved into the rock, tell the story of the fortress city, and their openings frame fantastic views over Grund, Clausen and Pfaffenthal. The casemates are open seasonally, so check the opening hours before you go.
- Still hungry for history? Explore more of Luxembourg’s former fortifications and learn even more about the city’s fascinating past.
Now it’s time to choose your own adventure.
24 hours, your way.
17:30 – Golden Hour in Luxembourg City
The afternoon is slowly turning into evening, which means it’s time for golden hour. Head back towards the Old Town and stroll through its historic streets. As the sun gets lower and the city begins to glow, it’s the perfect moment for one final viewpoint.
The Corniche, the Upper Town and the area around Place de la Constitution are all great spots to pause and take in the view. Maybe this will be your favourite moment of the day.
Our tip: The exact timing depends on the season. In summer the sun sets much later, so you can linger a little longer.
19:00 – Dinner time
After a full day of exploring, you’ve definitely earned a good dinner. Choose between a cosy bistro, a modern restaurant or traditional Luxembourgish cuisine and take some time to relax.
Still have some energy left? Grund is particularly beautiful in the evening, when the lights come on and the historic streets take on a whole new atmosphere.
21:00 – Luxembourg by night
Before heading back to the hostel, take one last evening stroll.
The Old Town has a completely different charm at night. There are fewer people around, the historic buildings are beautifully illuminated and familiar places suddenly look completely different.
Maybe stop for one last view over the city before making your way back to Pfaffenthal.
22:00 – Good night from the youth hostel
Back at the hostel, it’s time to wind down. Enjoy one last drink at the hostel bar, relax on the terrace with its view over the Old Town or head straight to bed. Because tomorrow, there’s always more to discover.
Good night, Luxembourg.
Bonus: next morning: one last coffee with a view
Got a little more time before leaving? Enjoy one last breakfast at the youth hostel and take in the unique atmosphere of Pfaffenthal once more. Then it’s time to say goodbye – at least for now.
Because while 24 hours is enough to get a taste of Luxembourg City, it’s probably not enough to see it all.
