Say Hi to HI Montréal in Canada

06.12.2018

Next stop in our series presenting the numerous youth hostels of Hostelling International, a charity that manages a federation of non-profit youth hostel associations, is Montréal in Canada.

Why you should go

Montréal is a big, busy, exhilarating city, with so much to see and do. The most populous municipality in the Canadian province of Quebec combines a bit of European influence with the laid-back living of Canada. Today, 120 distinct ethnic communities are represented in its population of more than 3.6 million, making Montréal a veritable mosaic of cultures and traditions.

As the world’s second largest francophone city after Paris, it merits the nickname ‘international’ city, a cosmopolitan centre with proud roots in the past that enthusiastically embrace the future. Day and night, Montréal pulses with activity and life. Each season, it is host to an array of events, exhibitions and gatherings for the thousands of culture, nature and thrill seekers who come here to enjoy its diverse offerings.

Three things not to miss in this bustling city are the ‘poutine’, a delicious combination of French fries and melted cheese curds topped with gravy - the perfect comfort food for surviving winter, the Greater Montréal bike path network, which is over 350 km long and the public markets located across the city. The most popular are Jean-Talon Market and Atwater Market, which have fed Montreal’s population since 1933.
