The modern youth hostel Esch-sur-Alzette opened its doors in spring 2017 for backpackers, families, groups and individual travellers, offering the perfect and above all affordable accommodation.

The youth hostel also features the in-house restaurant ‘Melting Pot’, decorated in an industrial style, a bistro with a small stage and five conference and meeting rooms completing thus the offer. In good weather, the guests may relax and linger on one of the three terraces.

As the youth hostel Esch-sur-Alzette is situated only a few minutes' walk from the local recreation area called ‘Galgenberg’ as well as the longest shopping mile in the country, it is ideal for activities of all kinds and for all ages. In addition, its direct location at the bus and train station offers multiple excursion possibilities through the entire region.

... by public transport:

The youth hostel Esch-sur-Alzette is located directly at the bus and train station of the city with the same name and is therefore easily accessible by public transportation. You will reach the capital by train in 24 minutes. But also the Greater Region, especially the bordering France is easily accessible from Esch-sur-Alzette. Public transport is free all over Luxembourg.

Coming from Luxembourg/Germany

Arriving from Trier/Luxembourg on the A1, continue onto the E25/E44/A6. Follow then the A4 in direction of Esch-sur-Alzette, passing Leudelange, Pontpierre and Mondercange. Take the exit 5 in direction of Esch-sur-Alzette – Centre/Schifflange. Continue on the N4 (rue de Luxembourg). In Esch-sur-Alzette, follow the street until you arrive at the roundabout on Boulevard John F. Kennedy. Take the third exit onto the N4/Boulevard John F. Kennedy. You arrive at the train station of Esch-sur-Alzette and the youth hostel.

Coming from Belgium/France:

Follow the A13 in direction of Sanem, Esch-sur-Alzette and Luxembourg. At Schifflange follow the A13 in direction of Esch-sur-Alzette. Take the exit 5 in direction of Esch-sur-Alzette – Centre/Schifflange. Continue on the N4 (rue de Luxembourg). In Esch-sur-Alzette, follow the street until you arrive at the roundabout on Boulevard John F. Kennedy. Take the third exit onto the N4/Boulevard John F. Kennedy. You arrive at the train station of Esch-sur-Alzette and the youth hostel.


… by bicycle

The youth hostel Esch-sur-Alzette is located at the bus and train station, in close proximity to the cycle path PC8 de la Terre Rouge, connecting Esch-sur-Alzette to Rumelange, Esch-Belval and Belvaux. In the north of the city, the cycle path PC6 des Trois Cantons connects Esch-sur-Alzette to Bettembourg, Sanem and Bascharage.

Parking

For cars:

The youth hostel does not have its own designated parking lot. We therefore advise you to make use of the fee-based public parking spaces and car parks of the city, such as the ‘John F. Kennedy’ car park opposite the youth hostel or the car park ‘Place de l’Hôtel de Ville’, which is only a few minutes’ walk away.

For buses:

Drive to parking Bvd A Meyer. You can leave your bus here during the night. Bus drivers can come back to the train station by taking the bus number 7.

The south of the country, also called the Red Rock Region, is a witness of the industrial heritage of the Grand Duchy. Esch-sur-Alzette is the second largest city of Luxembourg and stands for steel, multiculturalism and technologies. Sightseeing, a large choice of musical culture, shopping in the longest shopping street of Luxembourg as well as mountain biking on stunning trails are just some of the possible pastimes in Esch-sur-Alzette. School trips and group travel

If you’d like to organise group activities and school trips to the most important locations in the south of the country, you should definitely turn to the youth hostel Esch-sur-Alzette for advice, because the possibilities in the Red Rock Region are numerous. Discover the industrial culture whilst visiting the blast furnaces of Belval or taking a ride on the mining train in the national mining museum in Rumelange. Alternatives are a walk in the animal park on the Galgenberg, an interesting workshop in the nature conservation centre Ellergronn or indoor climbing in the ‘Redrock Climbing Centre’. Children as well as adults will be delighted.

Hiking package

Slowly but surely, nature reclaims its space in the ‘Minette’ and transforms the former iron ore region into a flourishing hiking area with special plant species and large nature reserves. Numerous local and national hiking paths are located in this region.

  • Hiking trip: The didactic path Natura 2000 in the ‘Ellergronn’ is divided into three thematic tours perfectly suited to families. The region also has a lot of circular walks to offer through Esch-sur-Alzette, Schifflange and Rumelange.

Restaurant ‘Melting Pot’
The youth hostels’ restaurant

The in-house restaurant ‘Melting Pot’ in Esch-sur-Alzette is structured like all the other restaurants of the youth hostels. Fresh and seasonal dishes are served here daily. Every day, the kitchen team prepares a new menu (starter, main dish and dessert) for the visitors. Special dishes for children and vegetarians can also be found on the menu. Everyone is welcome to eat lunch or dinner here, tourists as well as local residents, backpackers or bank clerks. The name of the restaurant says it all – a melting pot of different cultures and age groups meets here. The modern restaurant seats up to 75 people and showcases pictures of the industrial region. Stylish benches create a cosy atmosphere. On sunny days, the terrace is open. Tourist groups may choose between the many offerings of the catering brochure.
