Next stop in our series presenting some of the countless youth hostels of Hostelling International, a non-profit organisation that manages a federation of nonprofit youth hostel associations, is the Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark.
Why you should go
The Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark is one of the largest and most up-to-date hostels in Europe and lies right in the city centre in the commonly known ‘Backyard of Amsterdam’, in the heart of the Vondelpark. From the hostel, you’re only a short stroll away from all things hip and happening in the city.
Even if there’s enough to do outside, this hostel also warmly invites you to many of its events. Listen to live music, enjoy a pub quiz or play your favourite board games with your fellow guests! This place hosts enough events and opportunities to make sure you’ll never get bored.
Then again, how can you ever get bored of Amsterdam? It barely needs an introduction, and has something for everyone. Step outside and explore the Van Gogh museum, or maybe you’d rather like to see the grand Night Watch in the Rijksmuseum? No need to plan out your route, it’s practically across the street from the hostel.
If you’re not too fond of museums, you also have plenty of opportunities to shop or explore the countless Dutch pubs.
If you'd rather see more than tourist hotspots, we recommend thrill-seekers to visit the rooftop swings, where you swing high at a 100-meter tall tower for a truly unique experience. In order to relax a little, why not visit Those Dam Boat guys? A canal cruise like no other, where you get to see exactly what they think you should see. Want to see more? The know-it-all’s of the hostel staff will happily recommend some of their own favourite spots. Just go ahead and ask!
The hostel in a nutshell
This modern hostel offers 539 beds divided in 2-, 4- and 6-bedded rooms with an ensuite-bathroom as well as some large, colourful and newly-renovated dormitories welcome the tourists.
Besides modern rooms, this hostel also offers plenty of relaxing spots to rest your feet a little after all the walking and exploring, as well as a cosy bar that invites you to have a nice drink and meet some of the other travellers visiting Amsterdam. But if you really want to see more of the city, you should rent a bike and explore the numerous bicycle-friendly paths.
Another interesting fact about this hostel is that your stay can be climate-neutral. A small fee of about 20 cents is enough to make your night completely CO2-free. Stayokay will invest this money in green energy, to make sure they can get even more from sustainable sources.
