GPS workshop: in practice: hiking tour and how to use your device outdoors

In this day and age, GPS devices can be used anywhere at any time. Whether we travel by car, by mountain bike, go hiking or geocaching, this device is very handy. But how does it work during outdoor activities? How do you transfer routes from the GPS to your computer? Which device and software do you need for your hiking tour? And what is geocaching? Our workshops, organised in the city hostel, provide you with the answers to those questions and help you to understand the device.

During the second workshop, we will put the theory to practice. During a short hike, we will learn the use of the device. If you don’t own a GPS device, we will provide one for you. During the first workshop, held one week earlier, we will explain in detail the basics of the GPS device. The programme includes the planning of routes on the computer, maps as well as the different devices and software. The two workshops may also be booked separately.

Saturday, 25th of January 2020
From 9:30 am to 1:00 pm at the youth hostel Luxembourg

What’s a .gpx file?
How do I plan a route on the computer?
How do I find routes in the internet?

We learn how to plan and evaluate the routes on the computer and discover various kinds of software:

  • Garmin Basecamp
  • Geoportail.lu
  • Locus Map for android
  • Route portals on the internet

The participants may bring and use their own laptop. After the workshop, a debriefing will be organised during lunch in order to discuss the most important facts.

Saturday, 1st  of February, 2020
From 9:30 am to 1:00 pm at the youth hostel Luxembourg

GPS in practice – During a short hike through Luxembourg-city, we learn how to use the GPS device outdoors. Mapping out routes, finding way points as well as locating a geocache won’t be a challenge anymore.
