Exhibition Luxembourg Street Photography, 1950 – 2017

The exhibition showcases approximately 200 photographs featuring snapshots from everyday life in the public arena in Luxembourg City, from the 1950s to the present day. The common thread throughout all the images is that they are considered examples of ‘street photography’, which involves spontaneously capturing a given situation. Shots of random passers-by or groups of people become historical documents against the backdrop of the city, yet the atmosphere they exude and their composition also transcend their historical context.

Free guided tour every Thursday at 19:00.

Exhibition “The Luxembourg Story”

On 5th of May 2017, the Lëtzebuerg City Museum has opened its completely remodelled permanent exhibition “The Luxembourg Story”. On the three lower levels of the museum as well as in a space devoted to the current town planning (2,200 m2 in total), the new exhibition tells the eventful history of the city of Luxembourg, from its origins in the 10th century to the present day. By following the chronology of urban development, divided into four major periods and 17 topics, the exhibition focuses on the most important and characteristic aspects of each epoch. The exhibition provides local as well as foreign audiences with a concise introduction to the history of the city, with a corresponding selection of objects, films and sound documents, photographs and multimedia applications.

Mini-koala climbing course for children aged 5 – 7

From this year onward we have a brand new ‘mini-koala’ climbing course on offer. All children between the age of 5 and 7 are invited to participate in a 13-week course led by our professional climbing coaches. The activity will take place every Thursday between 2pm and 3pm on the youth hostel’s very own indoor climbing wall. While the primary aim is for the children to have fun, the course furthermore aims at stimulating concentration, coordination, balance and confidence.

Climbing is part of our human development and curiosity. Who hasn’t at some point felt the urge of climbing up a chair, wall or tree? It is therefore only natural to further support this development. Whilst having a whole load of fun, the ‘mini-koalas’ will be confronted with effort, happiness, pride, frustration and success, the sensations which make up much of our daily lives. Climbing is the perfect activity to satisfy a child’s need for movement whilst exploring their own boundaries, taking responsibility and learning to trust other people.

Requirements:
Course is optimised for children aged 5-7. No prior experience in climbing is required.

Sessions:
13 dates – always on Thursday from 2pm – 3pm.
Attention: No courses will take place during Luxembourgish school holidays.

Price per child for a total of 13 sessions:

  • 150 € (Price for members of the youth hostels*)
  • 160 € (Standard price for non-members)

20.09.2018 - 20.12.2018

Climbing course for children aged 8 – 12

The activity will take place every Thursday between 3.30pm and 5pm on the youth hostel’s very own 14 metres indoor climbing wall. While the primary aim is for the children to have fun, the course furthermore aims at stimulating concentration, coordination, balance and confidence. Acquired skills therefore may help kids in everyday life.

From a physical point of view, climbing is considered as a full-body workout because exercises involving coordination lead to an improved cooperation between different muscle groups and extremities. From a psychological point of view, the facing of challenges in climbing help enhancing self-confidence and self-assurance. The kids will be required to develop strategies in order to overcome various tasks. Furthermore, due to climbing being a sport in which progress is perceived rapidly, self-confidence is strengthened.

The course will take place if at least 6 participants register. Should the minimum amount of participants not be reached, you will be notified in due time.

Requirements:
Course is optimised for children aged 8-12. No prior experience in climbing is required.

Charity Climbing in Echternach

The 15th of December should be marked in red in your calendar. On this day, the youth hostel Echternach organises a sporty event for the good cause. During 7 hours, all the visitors are invited to ‘climb for our children’.

The youth hostel invites all sportsmen and climbing fans to join them in Echternach in the in-house climbing hall in order to conquer the 14-metre high wall and to support the association ‘Fondation Lëtzebuerger Kannerduerf - SOS Village d’Enfants Luxembourg’. Those, that have never climbed a wall before are also welcome to try their luck during this special event. With your help we want to collect as many donations as possible. You may sponsor yourself while participating in this event or find a person to sponsor you, like for example your family, friends or your firm. During this day, everything is about climbing the wall and how often you can make it to the top between 13:00 a.m. and 20:00 p.m.

Your participation fee of 3 € is directly fed into the donation piggybank. The sponsorship contribution per commenced climbing route is minimum 1 €. If you arrive at the top of your route, you may ring the bell. At this sound, we increase the donation fee and put also 1 € per successful climbing route in the piggybank.

During the whole day, refreshments and snacks will be available in order to strengthen the climbers and maybe help them to conquer the wall a second or third time. A framework program will be organised too.

The proceeds of the activity will be entirely donated to the association ‘Fondation Lëtzebuerger Kannerduerf - SOS Village d’Enfants Luxembourg’. We need your help and endurance. Spectators as well as supporters are also welcome during our special event, because the more money we collect, the more we’ll help the children from ‘Fondation Lëtzebuerger Kannerduerf - SOS Village d’Enfants Luxembourg’.

As places are limited, please book in advance by phone or e-mail.

We are looking forward to your support and help!
