Exhibition Luxembourg Street Photography, 1950 – 2017

The exhibition showcases approximately 200 photographs featuring snapshots from everyday life in the public arena in Luxembourg City, from the 1950s to the present day. The common thread throughout all the images is that they are considered examples of ‘street photography’, which involves spontaneously capturing a given situation. Shots of random passers-by or groups of people become historical documents against the backdrop of the city, yet the atmosphere they exude and their composition also transcend their historical context.

Free guided tour every Thursday at 19:00.

By following the chronology of urban development, divided into four major periods and 17 topics, the exhibition focuses on the most important and characteristic aspects of each epoch. The exhibition provides local as well as foreign audiences with a concise introduction to the history of the city, with a corresponding selection of objects, films and sound documents, photographs and multimedia applications.

Borderless hiking trip in the « Naturwanderpark DeLux » - in the footsteps of Carlo Hemmer*

The sixth edition of our traditional hike in the footsteps of Carlo Hemmer will start in Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland capital and lead us over the German border. Two day hikes of 20 to 28 km each awaits the participants, divided into two groups (group at intermediate speed and a sporty group at high speed). Our modern sports youth hostel in Echternach, located in the West of the country, is the departure point as well as the arrival of this hike. The tour begins in the nature park Mullerthal and leads us in the direction of the Eifel over the hiking paths called ‘DeLux’. After the guided tour with difficult level, a barbecue with a great lake view will be organised at the youth hostel Echternach, where we will spend the night.

The places are limited, please register in advance.

As in previous years, the hiking weekend is organised by the Luxembourgish youth hostelling association in cooperation with the Carlo Hemmer* foundation.

* Carlo Hemmer (1913-1988) from Ettelbrück was an important economist from Luxembourg. Alongside his many professional endeavours both in and outside of Luxembourg, Hemmer had always been a strong supporter of the youth and therefore also of Luxembourg’s youth hostel network. Upon his passing, half of Hemmer’s wealth was donated to the ‘Fondation Lëtzebuerger Jugendherbergen’ founded in 1986 and later renamed to ‘Carlo Hemmer Foundation’. The aim of the foundation is to receive funds and manage the foundation’s assets in order to support youth hostels, social tourism, sporting events and educational activities – independent of political, social and religious aspects.
