Discover the animal park of Esch-sur-Alzette located only a few footsteps from the youth hostel! The goal of the farm is to present ancient domestic animal breeds. Meet the horse race Konik and Huzule as well as the Poitou donkeys.

6. How to design a herbarium - Nature conservation centre Ellergronn

How do we best gather and pick plants? How do we properly dry, preserve and categorise plants? We’ll learn how to create an interesting and informative work of reference. Using our very first home-made herbarium, we’ll learn how to recognise trees based on their leaves. Please bring a bag or a basket in order to collect leaves in the wood.

The moss, the first plant to conquer the world, doesn’t have an efficient root system like other plants do. In the Cretaceous period, when the dinosaurs still populated the earth, flowering plants evolved and so did the insects, pollinating them. We are in awe of the vast inventiveness of nature.

11. NEW: Free activity: Tools expand the skills of the human hand - Nature conservation centre Ellergronn

A tool trolley as well as diverse materials like stones and wood are at your disposal on the site of the Ellergronn. Unmentored working time with tools allows the children to create objects with differents materials and to develop manual dexterity. Follwing this activity, you may visit the mining museum of the “Entente Mine Cockerill”, which will show the participants the every day life of the mine workers. Please note: there will be no workshop leader at the activity.

How was iron ore extracted back in the days? Which tools and machines were used to work in the tunnels and galleries? In collaboration with the ‘Entente Mine Cockerill’ we’ll learn all about the history and the tough working conditions of the miners.

13. Native birds in springtime - Nature conservation centre Ellergronn

We listen to the twittering of the birds, look for traces and observe the different birds. We also discover the diverse species and talk about their way of life, especially in spring and autumn. The main theme of this workshop is the behavior of the birds during the year (courtship display, nest-building, brooding, feeding, etc.). The activity is adapted to the age of the children. Other topics for older children include anatomy, ecology and bird protection.

14. Precious textile fibres - Nature conservation centre Ellergronn

Natural and synthetic fibres, manufactured since 1930, allow us to wear comfortable, protective and thermal clothing. During the activity at Ellergronn, children learn a lot about the origin of these useful textile fibres. After this introduction, plaits are made from sheep and alpaca wool. Some of the leaves collected during the walk through the forest can be used to decorate the plaits as well. Depending on the season, a visit to the sheep meadow can also be organised.

15. Why do the snails produce slime? - Nature conservation centre Ellergronn

Snails are not among our favorite animals. They are neither cute nor fluffy, but produce lots of slime. Although they are so slow and seem to be defenseless, snails are a model of success. We follow the tracks of the snails in a playful way to get to know more about them.

We often do not realize that various small animals live in the ponds. They are easy to catch even without having professional knowledge. During the activity, we are going to observe them and become more acquainted with them.

17. Museum of Resistance

Located in the centre of Esch-sur-Alzette, the Museum of Resistance deals with Nazi occupation and Luxembourg’s role in the Second World War as well as the reaction of the local population until the country’s liberation. Furthermore, the museum explains the system of concentration camps while documenting the sad fate of Luxembourg’s Jewish population. The museum also offers temporary exhibitions as well as guided tours and thematic tours of the city.

Discover the ‘Ellergronn’ nature reserve during a nocturnal torch hike and learn all there is to know about the mysterious natural landscape. Furthermore, a guide will explain the purpose and functionality of the old underground mining galleries.

19. Classic guided tour - Science City and blast furnace of Belval

The reconversion of the entire steel industry is one of the most incredible developments in Europe. During a guided tour, you get to explore the Science City as well as the original blast furnace, where the iron-making and the importance of Belval’s industrial history will be explained to you. One of the highlights is the climb onto the 40 metre high platform of the blast furnace.

Starting at Belval, discover the former iron ore sites of the region. The tour leads to the former industrial site calles “Red Rock”, through the working-class quarter ‘Hiehl’, the nature reserve ‘Ellergronn’, the city centre of Esch-sur-Alzette, the Arbed site in Schifflingen as well as the newly built disctrict in Belval. The tour ends at the terraces of the blast furnaces, which you are free to visit. Length of tour: 20,5 km.

22. Riding the mining railroad in Rumelange

A twenty minute ride on the mining railroad will get the participants into the mining galleries, which will subsequently be visited on foot. The different techniques of extracting the iron ore as well as the required machinery and harsh working conditions of the miners will be explained. The tour itself is recommended for all age groups and takes approximately 1½ hours, after which the participants take the mining railroad back into daylight. Furthermore, the guided tour is wheelchair accessible.

23. Interactive tour through the National Mining Museum in Rumelange

The interactive tour allows children to step into the role of a miner. On foot, the participants will head down to their temporary workplace, rapidly noticing just how dark it can get underground. The children will learn about the dangers and challenges of working in poor lighting, equipped with nothing but an acetylene lamp. The children will be actively involved in the mining process as they assist the guide in drilling, breaking iron ore blocks, securing the roof, pushing the mining trolley and even witness a controlled explosion. As the proud children resurface into daylight after their shift ends, a present awaits them to reward them for their day‘s work.

Equipped like a geologist, you will be searching for animals or plants from the past, which instead of simply vanishing, were preserved naturally in the stones. You will be searching for your own fossil in a heap of lime stone in a nearby quarry.

The new indoor climbing hall „RedRock Climbing Center“ in Soleuvre is the ideal location to try out this fun kind of sport. The largest climbing centre of the region boasts a main hall with a 1000 m2 large climbing surface and routes with a length up to 20 m. Furthermore, the climbing centre is made up of a separate formation room (7 m high) and a lower boulder area (4 m high). Before the visitors start to climb the wall, a coach will show them the safety techniques. And up you go!

The Luxembourg Science Center located in Differdange welcomes its visitors to a great discovery centre of various sciences. About 60 experimental stations explain the world of the sciences to the visitor. Spectacular performances and shows invite you to participate. Gigantic electric arcs of 1,5 million volts, robots, a molecular cooking workshop, melting steel in only seconds and much more is presented to the visitors which will be in awe and never forget what they witnessed.

Access: ride on the train (not included in the price) from/to ‘Esch/Alzette-Gare’/’Differdange-Gare’ (11 minutes). Transport is not included in the prices, but can be organised upon request. Public transport: www.mobiliteit.lu
Other: Please note that the offer is only available in combination with meals and / or overnight stay in a hostel. Otherwise, we will charge an additional administration fee of 10% per activity.
